Singapore is a melting pot of different cultures – apart from our expansive multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity, the little red dot is also home to interesting art in all kinds of forms. Right in the heart of Keong Saik Road itself, there are a handful of IG-worthy wall murals, created by talented local artists – Ripple Root and Yip Yew Chong aren’t veterans from nothing! Not only does Keong Saik Road boast a healthy selection of speakeasy bars, cafes, and picks for gastronomy, it’s also an art haven and your eyes will certainly be thoroughly blessed! In early October 2019, the folks at Urban Ventures takes it a few notches higher:
Urban Ventures is essentially an independent placemaking initiative to reclaim public spaces for art and culture. It’s practically like an artist’s plain canvas, but ever extrapolated onto the street of heritage that is Keong Saik Road. Over the course of the 3-day happening, people from all walks of life explored art in different forms with booths on the street. We should also mention that everyone was encouraged to bar and cafe-hop around in the hippy locale of Keong Saik Road!
Apart from art installations and booths, there were a couple of boutique participants too – fancy shaving your hair in the middle of asphalt?
Given that Singapore is practically summer 24/7/365, of course there’s a booth for refreshing drinks to beat the crazy heat… always a godsend.
It was a delight to see Keong Saik converted into a street of art at such a scale with Urban Venture; we look forward to what’s in store in the coming months!
